DARKNESS

“I am a forest, and a night of dark trees: but he who is not afraid of my darkness, will find banks full of roses under my cypresses.”

We are warriors.

Excerpt taken from by Tomas Hemstad in Columns July 16, 2013
I don't necessarily agree with his musical influences, but I relate with my own experiences...

"We all have magic instances, flashes of insight, feelings of being part of a great pattern. And while the triggers of our inner cosmologies may vary, each of us share the potential for those moments. Moments of clarity, growing, of an expanded vision of the world and ourselves. Moments of reality breeding with unreality; the feeling of seeing a new color for the first time. And not only do we have the potential to experience these moments we can create them, share the experience with others. Every man and every woman is a freaking super hero. But most of us will supress it, out of necessity, lack of privilege, but also by choice.
We live in a world of racism and patriarchy, of capitalist cruelty and the infantile culture it produces. The immediacy of modern communications has made that world more transparent then ever before. A jury in Miami declares that white men shooting black men is not a crime. In Greece sex workers, drug users and undocumented immigrants can now be forced to undergo testing for HIV and hepatitis and risk public shaming and/or losing their homes if proven positive. Russia is well on their way to criminalizing homosexuality altogether. All in a scroll of the news feed, between LOLcats and Boiler Room links. The world is burning – same as it ever was. So who are we to make mixtapes and parties, start bands, make films and write books?
We are warriors.
Every time we make a sick beat, write a mind-blowing poem or create a space for people to be more than they imagine themselves to be, we are waging war on the status quo. If you engage, you are partaking in the jihad against boredom, stagnation and sameness. The boxes will always be there, but so will the people kicking down the sides. It doesn’t give you an excuse to opt out of politics or ignore systematic errors. With great powers come great responsibilities, and great powers are to be found in pirated software, abadoned factory spaces and your own mind.
How many lives were changed by Public Enemy, by Nico, by Crass, by Carl Craig? Would you be where you are, and who you are today, without that defining moment when you saw THAT movie or heard THAT album?
We want to be the catalyst for those moments.
The death of the music industry has done nothing to harm creativity. Subculturality is dying but there’s still (and always will be) a riot going on. EDM culture is the counter revolution, hipster hatred is a red herring and streaming services are just new prisons for music. Spotify is never going to have defining influence on anyones life. Mykki Blanco will."
